As mentioned in this post, I’m attempting to get my own BQ.  I am excited to be training using again the Hansons Method.  In a nutshell, this training is based on the concept of cumulative fatigue.  You train your body to run often so that you are frequently running on tired legs.  The idea is to run this way so that during the last miles of a race you are prepared to push through the final miles. These plans are 18 weeks and have you running 6 days (easy, speed/strength, tempo, and long runs) a week with one rest day.  I am not sure when I will qualify but am determined to get there.

Week #6, May 1-7

M Ran 4.02 Miles
T Ran 8.02 Miles (12 x 400)
W OFF
TH Ran 1.42 Miles
F Did not run
S Ran 5.05 Miles at the Cinco de Miler
S Ran 8.02 Miles

This week was interesting.  I did my first speed workout and tempo run.  Plus, I did a race on Saturday. The week did not go as expected but overall it was still a good week.

Monday run was pleasant.  Cool and windy but felt great to run.

Tuesday was at the track for 12×400.  Total was 8.02 miles with 1 mile warmup and cool down and 400m recovery after each 400.  I wanted to quit halfway.  It took me 1 hour and 35 minutes.  Luckily it was Teacher Appreciation Week and Chipotle had an offer for buy 1, get 1 one.  You bet I went after my workout!

Thursday’s tempo was blah.  I went to the gym because I did not want to deal with the wind and rain. Joke was on me because it was worse on the treadmill.  I could not get a groove and managed 1.42 miles.  Oh, and it did not rain at all so I could have run outside.

Saturday’s race was cold and windy but still fun!!  I love it when I get free pictures but disappointed that it was only one picture. It was my first time running this race (not a fan of Cinco de Mayo) and finish time is 57:56.

Total mileage for the week: 26.53 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle:  119.77 miles
Total mileage for the year: 167.96 miles

I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap and Courtney for her Training Recap Link Up!

Hoping everyone had a good week!

  1. Whoa 12×400’s? Are you following a plan or a coach? That seems excessive…. in my opinion.. and quite a jump from what you were doing previously. Burnout and injury come to mind. Stay healthy.

    • Thank! For now I’ve been following the Beginner’s Plan of the Hansons Marathon Method. For the first couple of weeks it was all easy runs and now the “real” work starts. It’s been recommended to hire a coach which I think I will not haven’t decided when.

  2. I actually ran 5 miles on Cinco de Mayo without even realizing it LOL The free pics are nice! At my race this morning…we could post pics on Instagram or Twitter and hashtag the event, and they printed the pics for us and had them on display (for us to take). I have never seen that before!

  3. Congrats on your race! My last race had free pictures but I haven’t spent time trying to look for mine!

    • Thanks! I had forgotten about the pictures. I received an email from the race organizers and am happy they did or else I wouldn’t have my picture.

    • Thanks! It is nice today but supposed to rain again Tuesday and Wednesday. But then you are going to hear me complain about the hot weather once summer begins. When do you start marathon training?

  4. I have heard others following the Hanson’s plan and really liking it. It does sound like a lot of running. I probably run that many times a week now. However, I do not break it up into speed or temp work. I think that would be a challenge!

    • Thanks! I am liking it so far. I realize 6 days is excessive but I like how two days are different (speed and tempo) which helps break up the runs and it isn’t so repetitive.

  5. well done on your race! we don’t celebrate “cinco de mayo” here at all. in the Netherlands it’s Liberation Day so lots of WWII commemorations going on.

    • I would much rather celebrate that. Cinco de Mayo is just another “holiday” for people to eat and drink. Most Mexicans don’t care too much about it.

  6. Great job on your runs! That track workout sounds tough, well done! And congrats on your race!

  7. I don’t know if I’ve said this, but I love that you’ve put your BQ goal out there. I have a similar long term goal and am working on a post about it now. 🙂

    • Thanks! It was scary putting it out there but I realized that it will only push and motivate me. I am excited to read about YOUR long term goal.

  8. I think I’d die if I ran 12x400m so early in a training cycle. Emily and I ran Cinco de Miler last year. It’s a fun race but yes, the wind on Saturday was fierce.

    • I know what you mean about the workouts. But at least I had 5 weeks of easy running and then “gently” transitioned to speed workouts but still 12 is a lot. I remember you and Emily running that race and if I remember correctly there was some sort of issue with a bib?? I prefer races in Grant Park instead of Montrose Harbor.

    • I think it depends. I had minimal problem running them last year on the treadmill but for some reason I could not get into the groove last week. It’s been a few months since I’ve done tempo runs so hopefully it was just one of those days and my future ones will go smoother.

  9. How cute is your race photo though!! Girl, that’s a lot of running! I honestly don’ think I could run that many days and not end up injured. I’m so impressed! I’m rooting for you on getting a BQ …you can do it!

    Have a great week!

    • Thanks! I like my picture too. 🙂 I am crossing my fingers I stay injury free. I am doing much more stretching and foam rolling than I did last summer. Thanks for your support and encouragement!

  10. Well, at least the one picture you got is a great one! I think that’s better than several bad ones. LOL. Chipotle sounds like the perfect way to celebrate after a hard interval training session. Great job! Thanks for linking, Zenaida!

  11. Great job this week! I’m so happy to hear you’re excited and feel motivated to BQ! I know you can do it! Fight those negative thoughts that tell you, you can’t!
