Weekly Mileage-16

I hope everyone had a good week!  I am amazed at how fast these months seem to go by.  This week was kind of low key but still a good week.  I did not do much when it came to running (I did run a race).  It has been hot (except today) and if I am not out there early enough, forget it, no running for me.  I could go to the gym but prefer to run outside.

I had a 20 minute run on Monday but could not get up in the morning.  If you read my Missoula Half Marathon recap, then you know that my flight was delayed and I did not get home till almost midnight.  Thank goodness my coworker picked me up because then I would have had to take a cab or Uber home (O’hare airport is 26 miles from my house). Since my original flight was supposed to get in at 5pm, I was planning on taking the train home.  Yeah, I did not want to do that late at night.

My left leg was still bothering me so I also skipped my run on Tuesday.  I did get up early to run but then realized it felt uncomfortable to even walk.  I used a small ball to massage my foot.  It did feel better afterwards and then just decided to get ready for work.  Something else I noticed about my feet that has never happened before is that they swell.  Some of my shoes feel tighter and even my running shoes hurt in the shoelace area.  I don’t tie my shoes anymore (I leave them tied); I just take them off and put them back on.  The tightness is so weird.

Wednesday was my last day of summer school and the students made a flag with popsicle sticks.  It amazes me how many kids do not know how to use a paintbrush.  Heck, it amazes me how many do not know how to use a pencil!!

That evening I went to my mom’s in Palos Heights for the fireworks in the evening.  It didn’t start till 9:15 and usually by that time I am already home.  It was a good show and lasted about 20 minutes.  By the time we were back at the apartment and got her ready for the night (insulin injection, take medication, and check glucose) it was after 10 and I was EXHAUSTED.  I also had a headache.

Thursday morning I had a race.  I almost decided not to race that morning because I was still tired.  I am glad I did get up because it is a race that I’ve run since 2013 and always have fun.  I quickly got up, got ready, and drove to the race.  I made it with about 30 minutes before the start, got my bib, took a Oiselle group picture, and use the port-a-potties.  It was HUMID!

I had mentioned that I would have liked a PR in this race.  Not sure how realistic it would be but definitely possible.  Somehow my body was not cooperating and I could barely get the legs moving.  The humidity did not help.  I was sweating almost as soon as I started.  I didn’t even come close to a PR but I did slightly better than last year.  Finish time is 44:12.  Last year I finished in 44:17.  Dang, I shouldn’t have taken so many walking breaks.  But it still counts, right?

Friday was all about catching up on sleep and relaxing.  I wanted to do my Saturday run on Friday but woke up late and by then it was over 88 degrees outside.  Again, I could have gone to the gym but didn’t want to.  I spent the day catching up on blog posts and basically doing nothing.  I stayed in my pajamas all day.  I am one of those people that could stay home in pajamas all day and not get bored.  🙂  Even Lola could not stand the heat!

Saturday’s run was 2 mile warm up, 5×3 minutes with 2 minute walking recovery, and 2 mile cool down.  It was so humid in the morning and very uncomfortable.  I posted on Instagram that it sucked.  I was miserable.  I did not hit the required paces and didn’t care because I just wanted to get home.  On the positive side, I got it done and it is another run in the bank for my upcoming races.

By Saturday night the weather had cooled down and it was pretty decent on Sunday morning.  I ran 4 miles in a new to me area by Lake Katherine.  It was overcast and cooler.  The run went so much better than Saturday’s.  🙂

30 Comments on Weekly Run Down: First week of July and summer break

  1. I love those popsicle flags!!!! Yeah, it’s been hot and humid here, too. That’s typical July weather, but it feels warmer than usual because June was so crazy cold. Thanks for linking with us!!

  2. Good to see you at Elmhurst! That race was REALLY hard – the ramps of the underpass killed me!

  3. I always assess fine motor skills for my kindergarten physicals and am amazed at how many kids can’t hold a pencil correctly. Sigh.

Today was much better for running! I hope you enjoyed!

    • Isn’t it sad the many things kids at that age cannot do? Is it because they can’t or because they do not know how. I’ve seen them cut “simple” things and have to show them how to do it.

  4. I had kind of the same experience at my race on Thursday, LOL — not wanting to push, then realizing afterwards if I’d just pushed a little harder . . . oh well. The heat was unbearable this week, truly, and I had zero FOMO about my friends who ran yesterday.

You do such fun crafts with your students!

  5. The heat and humidity this week were pretty bad! Great job during your 4th of July race!

I love the popsicle flags that you did with the kids. You always have the best crafts for them.

  6. Glad to see that you took some time off after your half. I think most of us don’t take the time to recover after races (me included). Way to hot to race right now for me. congrats on yours and thanks for linking up

    • I understand the importance of recovery and embrace it. I guess the traveling, time change (even if it was an hour) and early wake ups finally took a toll on me. It took a few days to recover. 🙂

  7. Those flags are adorable! I love school crafts!

You know I am no stranger to humidity. Sorry you are dealing with it.

And it’s ok to rest, especially after lots of travel. Or so I keep telling myself.

Have you tried compression socks to help with the swelling? That can be so uncomfortable.

    • The humidity came out of nowhere and shocked us. We had a slow start to summer so we will not expecting the hot weather.

I love making art projects with my kids. I also love seeing them have fun too.

I use compression socks during my runs but I will try them when I am not running. Perhaps at night because I definitely do not want to wear them during the day in this weather.

  8. Sometimes you have to throw away pace goals when running in this weather. It’s really just too hard. Still, pushing through at any pace can be good conditioning, as long as you don’t over do it. I wonder if the post-race flight (and delays) led to your feet swelling? Hopefully you are eeling ok now.

    • Actually I noticed the swelling before my trip so it has to be something else. Maybe the heat? Google says swelling could be a problem such as heart, liver, or kidney disease. Oh boy.

  9. Our fireworks didn’t start until 9:45pm. Ditto on your thoughts – it’s so late!! haha We all considered not going, but in the spirit of the holiday I made my family go. No worries, they enjoyed it. It was a hot week around here too. I like to think it makes me stronger 🙂

    • I remember when I used to go to sleep around 9 or 9:30pm. Staying up past that makes me grumpy. I am glad I did go because my mom enjoyed them too.

  10. Sounds like a good recovery week after your half last weekend. Heat will slow you down, no doubt about it. Congratulations on finishing summer school! I hope you can relax for the rest of the summer!

    • Thanks. I am excited to be done too. I don’t think I will do it again next year. The hours are fine and the money is good too but sometimes I felt like staying home. The heat took me by surprise, especially since we had a late start to summer.

  11. Long weekend here and other than yesterday when I met my run group at 8 there was a lot of pajama lingering too
I feel you on late fireworks – we’re getting too old for this

    • Haha. I remember when I would go to bed at 9 or 9:30. That was wonderful. Long runs tend to zap the energy out of me. Sometimes I would take me a day to recover from my long run.

  12. The flag craft came out great! This week was brutal for running. I’m so grateful it cooled down. What a bummer you got home so late from Montana. Flight delays are the worst.

    • I am happy too it cooled down but it looks like it will get hot again. I am stalking the weather every single day because I will be running RnR Chicago on the 21st. Something is up with the weather on race day whether it is raining or hot. That race should be moved to August or September.

I was glad I was able to get home that night and not spend the night in Missoula.

  13. Are you teaching another session of summer school or are you finished for the summer? I’m like you – I can keep myself perfectly happy for hours without ever getting bored. 🙂
