Weekly Mileage-56

Another great week for me!  Ran 5 days for a total of 20.07 miles and did 2 virtual races for the Uncanceled Project.

I have my days when I can easily get up at 6:30 am and am ready to start the day.  There are also days in which it is 8 am and I am feeling so tired and could stay in bed all day.   I  This week was a combo of both.  I did three runs in the morning, 1 in the afternoon, and another one in the evening.  have no idea how I am going to do it when I go back to the classroom in the Fall.

Going back to workMy run on Saturday felt so hard.  I procrastinated and went out at 2pm . I was struggling in the first half mile of the run.  The plan was to run 3.10 miles and then turn around to run another 3.10 miles for a total of 6.20.  At 1.5 miles I wanted to quit but knew I still needed to keep running to get home.  I decided to try a different route to get home.  By the time I was almost home, I was at 4.23 miles.  I asked myself “why quit now?”  I kept on going but stayed close to home because I knew it was going to rain a lot.  It did!!!  And then it was sunny and warm again.

I got on the Peloton one day.  I bought these gym towels to use and I like them.  They’re the perfect size to cover the handlebars.  I had ordered a different kind but that order never got delivered.  After a few emails back and forth with the company, I decided to get my money back and go with Plan B.

The theme this week was Kindness.  I am a kind person.  I do kind things but don’t expect anything in return.  We should all be kind no matter the situation.  We don’t know what people are going through and sometimes all it takes is a smile, a compliment, or just being nice to others.

Essential Workers

Last Sunday when I was coming home I stopped at Wendy’s.  I paid for my meal and paid for the order in the car behind me.  Did I have to do that?  No,  I wanted to.  The cashier told me “That is a very nice thing you did”.  I smiled at her and said “Thank You”.  I felt good but more importantly I hoped the people behind me were happy, healthy, and enjoyed their meal.

My friend, Carolina, set up a GoFund Me page to raise money for the street cart vendors in Little Village.  I grew up in Little Village.  These vendors cannot go out there and sell like they used to.  Like many people in this country, they have no income.  When things get better, who knows if they will be able to sell again.  I donated a couple hundred dollars to give to the vendors.  I was inspired by my nephew.  He donated his stimulus check because he said he did not need it.  I was so proud of him when he said that.  I used Zelle to send the money to Carolina and she told me it was too much money and that I didn’t have to do that.  She was right.  I didn’t but I wanted to.  I told her that right now I am very lucky.  I have a job, a house, and am healthy.  There are other people in worse situations.

KIndness-1

We have two weeks left of school.  Seriously, school should be done this Friday and not the following Friday.  Kids and teachers are burnt out and need a break.  On Thursday I held my last Google Meets session with them.  I would have one Monday-Thursday from 10am-1pm.  I did tell them that I will still be there for them if they have questions or need help.  As a way of saying goodbye to 2nd grade, I made a postcard.  Here is what it says:

Your teacher misses you.
Hi!  The school year is almost over.  You did a good job in the classroom and I am very proud of you.  Thank you for your help and your patience.  I know these past few months were not easy but we did it.  Remember that when we return the following year, you will be a 3rd grader.  Never forget that you are very intelligent.  Take care and I hope you visit me in the classroom when we return to school.

28 Comments on Weekly Run Down: A good week of running and being kind

  1. I love that you did both the 5K and 10K runs for the Un-canceled project this week.

I think that acts of kindness are so important right now. I feel so bad that the essential workers are being disrespected – it’s really unfair. They are busting their butts everyday.

    • I like that it’s keeping me motivated. I don’t have any races to train for so at least I have these. I would love to do what Kim and Wendy are doing – run the same “race” on the same day each week.

  2. High 5 for another strong running week! Don’t hate, but school finished on Friday. Midnight was the final due date and the boys dragged it out until 11:59 of course.

    • Thank you. Haha, so funny about your boys. I give my students till 7pm to turn in assignments. They’re 2nd graders and have no business turning in assignments really late anyway.

  3. Love all your acts of kindness. My friend gave me the idea to buy multi-packs of snack food at the grocery store and then ask the manager to donate them to the employee break room — it’s a small way to show my appreciation.

  4. really nice week of running for you! It’s been nice to see you on the runbet too. Very kind to pay for the meals of others too. Thanks for linking

    • Thanks Deborah. So many different things have been motivating and made me get out the door! I am done with the RunBet Challenge and am a winner. I hope EVERYONE is a winner too!

  5. So great that you did the Un-Cancelled Project! And two runs at that!
Great that you didn’t quit on the 10k but carried on.
I love your examples of kindness. It feels nice to provide some joy in someone’s life.
Your kids will love those postcards! 🙂

  6. I wish people would be more kind! Particularly on FB, where it is getting pretty vicious! That was nice of you to donate money. I feel so badly for the people in Little Village, especially after the tower was taken down and covered the whole area with dust.

    • Facebook and Twitter are the worst! I have a Twitter account but don’t have the app on my phone. I only check it here and there but that is it. I am saving money for a downpayment and I think I have enough. I donate whenever I can because I have enough for rent, food, and bills. What else do I need?

  7. Great job with your runs! I love hearing about the kind things you have done. And your kids are very lucky to have you as a teacher!

  8. Thank you for being a bright spot in others’ days. This pandemic is truly bringing out the worst in some people, so it’s good for as many people to shine a light as they can. Fantastic work with your runs! You’re really kicking butt!

You are an amazing teacher and your students are certainly lucky you are there for them.

    • Thank you! I know I said it before but I do have my days when I am struggling and doubting myself. I guess it is a normal feeling for many people whether you’re a doctor, police officer, etc.

  9. Bless you for your kindness to others, especially to your students. I don’t remember where I saw it, but a quote that had a huge impact on me is: “Always show kindness to others, especially to those who may not deserve it…they are the ones who need it most.” Great job on your runs this week, too!

    • Thank you. And that quote is so true. We just need to remember to just be kind no matter what.

I think about my students. The ones that act out or misbehave are the ones that are struggling the most. They are behaving like that because something is going on in their lives and they do not know how to handle it.

  10. I’ve been doing most of my running in my neighborhood also.
If I don’t feel good it’s easy to get home. If I feel good I just go strait instead of making a turn.
It’s also a great way to see what’s going on in the neighborhood. It’s amazing how many homes have been renovated or are being renovated.

    • Good points! I like doing that cause I just don’t want to drive anywhere else. Most of my runs are short ones so there is no point in going somewhere else.

  11. Great week of runs for you! I love that you were so thoughtful to donate. You’re so right about essential workers working their tails off. I can’t imagine how stressed out and tired they must be. Good luck with the final weeks of this very weird school year.

    • Thanks! Essential workers are the best! They’re not being appreciated enough and are also being mistreated. Ugh! Some people are just so mean. I am counting the days till the last day of school. 🙂

  12. What a wonderful gesture from your nephew! And how true is that sign. I saw a man treating the person who was doing the initial screening at the door when was in getting my MRI yesterday very rudely. He didn’t have an appointment and right now they are only letting in people with apts and he was refusing to come back another time. I could tell it was very stressful for all of the other employees as well.

I bet a lot of people will feel like that kitten when they have to go back into the office.

Hope you’re having a great week!

  13. So much kindness this week – you are a wonderful person 🙂 I love the note to your students. I’m surprised your school is going longer. I don’t think much of anything has been going on the last few days of school here! Good job on getting the runs done. I can usually count on a run which was postponed until the afternoon to be super challenging! That’s a tough time of day for me to run.

    • Thank you! I am surprised too. Next week we have a few “assessments” to give them for reading and math. Honestly I don’t see how much help it will be since by now students are over and done with this eLearning. 🙂
