Tuesday Topics: A Day in the Life of Ms. Arroyo

This week’s Tuesday Topic:  A Day in Your Life.  You can write about this topic or post any running-related blog post.  Remember to link up with Kim and Zenaida!  Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!

I’ve done several Day in the Life of a Teacher post.  The first one was on November 6, 2016when things were “normal”.  The next one was on June 25, 2019.  I wrote it when I was teaching Summer School.  The next one was on May 11, 2021I wrote it during remote learning.  The last one was on May 17, 2022It was fun reading each one again and reflecting on how each one is very different.

Here is a typical day for me (I chose Wednesday):

5:00-5:30 AM
I get up and make my coffee.  I check my school email and then my personal email.  I send the Friday linkup code to my cohosts.  I read posts from the Tuesday linkup.  I also read comments and respond to them.  Then I get ready and head out for my run.  Depending on the distance, I am back by 6:30 or 7 am.

After my run, I shower, get ready, make my smoothie, and hit the road.

7:00-8:30 AM
I arrive at school during that time.  I no longer try to get there by 7 am.  There have been times when I arrived at 8 am and it was OK.  I live 6 miles from my school but the later I leave, the more traffic I encounter.  Still, I am not going to stress out if I get there late.

During this time I eat breakfast, check work email, make copies, talk to colleagues, go to the bathroom, and get ready for the day.

8:30-8:45 AM
The bell rings at 8:30 to let the kids into the school.  A few minutes later my students are lined up outside the classroom.  They come in and eat breakfast.  Those that do not eat, color, or do something else.  I take attendance and do lunch count.

8:45-10:20 AM
My kids have Reading till 10:20 am.  We either read one of the books from the curriculum or go to the rug for a read-aloud.  I also meet with some students in a small group setting to work on Reading skills.  The others have various tasks to do.

10:20-11:00 AM
We have Writing.  It is the most difficult subject to teach.  Many of my students struggle with writing.

11:00-11:45 AM
The students line up for lunch.  Last week it was very warm and they had outside recess.  I eat lunch with my coworker in her classroom.  At 11:35 we go outside to meet the students and they stay an extra 10 minutes outside.  When it is cold or raining, they stay in the gym and watch a movie.  I still need to go down at 11:35.  My coworker and I let them run around and play for another 10 minutes before going back to the classroom.

We read and write in English.  I am actually impressed with them because English is not their first language.  They have been working very hard!  Sometimes we color or do something fun.

12:30-1:15 PM
My class is split up and they get ready for either Music or Gym.  The class that goes to Gym usually has Art but on Wednesday they have Gym.  Another 2nd-grade class is also split up and they also go to Gym or Music.  The Music teacher is in my room so I cannot stay there.  I either go next door to my coworker’s classroom or internal sub.

1:15-2:30 PM
Math.  My favorite subject.  Right now they’re working on line plots.  I find this topic boring.  I’d rather go over again adding and subtraction, place value, and word problems.  This is my second year teaching Math in English and it is so hard for my students and for me.  Everyone is struggling.  The reason I am teaching it in English is because of the dual language curriculum.  However, next year I will get to teach Math in Spanish.

2:30-2:45 PM
Recess time!  Our favorite time of the day.  😀   Sometimes we go outside 5 to 10 minutes earlier.  We take advantage of the warm days to get extra time outside.  Prior to going outside, the students get their papers from the mailbox and their backpacks and jacket.

2:45-2:50 PM
The bell rings and they line up.  The students cannot leave till 2:50 pm.

2:50-3:00 PM
The bell rings again and the students let me know who is there to pick them up.  Once everyone is picked up, I go back inside to get my things and head down to the gym.  We have a building meeting from 3:05-4:05.  We have a building meeting about 3 times each month.

After work, I either go straight home or stop at the store.  At home, I cuddle with my cats and rest for a bit.  I eat and check blog posts.  Sometimes I’ll watch a bit of TV or read a book before getting ready for bed.  It was a long day.

I like my schedule.  I like the “break” at 12:30.  If I don’t have a meeting or need to internal sub, then that is time for me to grade papers, make copies, plan for the next day, etc.  I also like the recess time at 2:30.  It means that my day is almost over and I can stop teaching.  I am not so crazy about lunchtime.  I feel like it is too early, but at the same time, it gives me a break in the day.

What about bathroom breaks?  I usually go in the morning, during lunch, or at 12:30.  If I need to go at another time, I ask my coworker to stay with my students.

Tuesday Topics: The World Major Marathon I would pick to run

This week’s Tuesday Topic:  If you had a free entry to any of the World Major Marathons, which one would you pick?  You can write about this topic or post any running-related blog post.  Remember to link up with Kim and me!  Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!

There is so much excitement right now with the Boston Marathon taking place next week.  I cannot wait to watch it again with my students.  However, I do wish I were going to Boston to spectate.  I think I said last year that I wanted to go this year to do that.  Next year?

I’ve only run one of the World Major Marathons – the Chicago Marathon.  And I’ve run it 5 times!  So which one would be the next one if given free entry to another World Major Marathon?  Read more to find out!

There are 3 that I would like to run and have listed them in order.  The last 2 are those that I’m not that interested in but could run if given an entry.

➡️ Boston Marathon.  This one is on top of the list because I know that I will never get a chance to run it because I will never qualify for it.  I know there is a charity route but I really don’t want to do that.

➡️ New York City Marathon.  I know many people that have run it have raved about it.  Just running the NYC Half Marathon was so much fun and that was half the fun.  I am sure the marathon will be a blast.

➡️ London Marathon.  One day I would like to go to London.  It will be fun to see the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.  I know there are other things to see but those two stand out to me the most.

➡️ Berlin Marathon.

➡️ Tokyo Marathon.

Tuesday Topics: How I get my Vitamin C

This week’s Tuesday Topic:  Today is National Vitamin C Day, how do you get your vitamin C?  You can write about this topic or post any running-related blog post.  Remember to link up with Kim and Zenaida!  Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!

I admit that I do not get enough Vitamin C.  I do what I can to at least get some of it.  Here is what I do:

🍉 I drink a smoothie Monday through Friday.  My smoothie has oatmeal, almond milk, protein powder, and either spinach or frozen fruit (depending on my mood).  Sometimes it is without the spinach or fruit.

🍉 Eat fruit.  I don’t have fresh fruit in the house (I know, I know), but if I see fruit already cut up, then I will grab a plate or two of it.  It tastes so much better with Tajín.

🍉 Take Emergen-C.  I don’t take this every day.  I take it here and there and even so when I feel like I will get a cold.

Tuesday Topics: March 2023 Review

This week’s Tuesday Topic is a FREE topic.  Feel free to post any running-related blog post.  Remember to link up with Kim and Zenaida!  Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!

March is almost over which means April is almost here.  That means Spring Break is around the corner!  One week off to relax and enjoy.  I am not going anywhere and that is OK with me.  I want to stay home.

Let me tell you about how March went for me:

Mileage:  It wasn’t low but neither high.  As of today, I’ve run 59.62 and walked 1.87 miles.  There are still a few more days this month so I am sure those numbers will go up.

Current Book:  I finished reading “Three Sisters”.  Wow!  Beautiful and sad book.  I cried many times while reading it.  The love among the sisters was so strong while going through a horrific time.

I am currently reading “The Husbands”.  It is book #8 for this year.

Current Shoes: Still running in the Brooks Ghost.  I need to retire these soon.  I also have the Launch 9 and the Hyperion Tempo.  I’ve been eyeing another pair of the Ghost but will not buy them yet.  Nope, self-control.

2023 Running Goal:  My goal this year is to run 800 miles.  It is about 67 miles per month.  Total mileage to date is 138.07.  It is low but I know I can make it up in the upcoming months.  As long as I stay healthy and injury free, I am confident I will reach my goal.

Injuries: None.  The hip is better.  It isn’t 100% better but not as bad as before.

Races:  I ran two this month – NYC Half Marathon and Shamrock Shuffle 8k.   Both went well and I did better than expected.  My running/training hasn’t been great but I am pleased with how I did.

School:  Almost less than 2 months to go.   Right now what keeps me going is knowing that I am off next week.  I think my students need a break too…from me.

Health:  The hot flashes continue.  It is awful!  I got some bloodwork drawn and found out that my HBa1c has increased.  That worries me because I don’t want it to get higher and be diabetic.  I’ve been eating pretty much the same (in December my HBa1c was 4.9) but do wonder how much my lack of running has caused it to increase.  I’ve been more stressed than usual and haven’t been sleeping well because of the hot flashes.

March was OK.  Hopefully, April is better.  I was supposed to run the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile but have decided not to make the trip to Washington DC this weekend.  There is one race I want to do next month.  I know I keep talking about it and now just have to sign up.  I may do just well just like my last two races, right?

Tuesday Topics: My Spring 2023 running plans

This week’s Tuesday Topic:  What are your Spring running plans and/or race schedule?  You can write about this topic or post any running-related blog post.  Remember to link up with Kim and Zenaida!  Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!

I ran my first race of the year in NYC on Sunday.  I got back yesterday and had to go to work for parent/teacher conferences.  It was a long day for me.  Today is an Institute Day.  I have no desire to go but don’t want to take another day off.  We’ll see how it goes today.

Spring is here! That means warmer weather (hopefully) and more races.  Here are my plans for this Spring.

💐 Run the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8k (3/26) and the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile (4/2).  Two races in two weeks.  Woohoo!!  There is another race in April (Lakefront 10 miler and 5k) and May (Spring Trail Chase 10K) that I am eyeing.

💐 Use the Peloton bike.  Right now it is just there in the living room collecting dust.  No bueno.  One way or another I want to fit it into my schedule.

💐 Walk more.  I love using the run/walk method and that is what helped me get a “decent” finish time on Sunday.  I also enjoy walking for a few minutes after a run.  But a 20-30 minute daily or every other day walk sounds doable and lovely too.

💐 Stretch and foam roll.  We all know it needs to be done.  😊

💐 Be consistent with running.  I need a plan.  Not sure if I want to work with a coach or do my own thing.  While I have no plans for a marathon, I am still toying with the idea of a 50k.  My last two attempts failed but hopefully, the third one will work out.  The one I am thinking of doing is in October so there is plenty of time to get ready for it.

Next week is a FREE topic.  Feel free to write about any running-related topic.  We hope you’ll link up with us!
